Dick and I were both excited about having met Kerry Healey Monday night at our weekly Rotary meeting. Kerry is the former MA Lt Governor (under Mitt Romeny) and a former Rotary Ambassadorial scholar. She was a spectacular guest, and about as open and friendly a politician as I have ever seen.
We also talked about the Government takeover of GM (Govmo), the pushback on Chrysler by the bondholders and other funky economic moves under President Obama.
Next we were on to the Obama’s date night to NY city, which Dick believes is the status quo, and I think is outrageous given the state of the economy.
We talked about the disparity between Dick Cheney and President Obama on the gay marriage issue. Cheney supports gay marriage as passed by the states – my position, and President Obama supports civil unions but opposes gay marriage.
We also talked about Sonia Sotomayor’s battle to be named to the Supreme Court and the double standard applied to minorities and white men.
We wondered when Nancy Pelosi will address her allegations that the CIA often lies to Congress , and we talked about a Chinese audience laughing at Tim Geithner’s assurances that the US economy is strong and Chinese assets are safe.

The President announced the appointment of Judge Sonia Sotomayor shortly before we went on the air which provided fodder for discussion. I lamented that it is getting tougher and tougher to be a white male in this country these days, particularly in light of Judge Sotomayor’s remarks:
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life”
What a double standard we have in this country! A white male who made those remarks about white men would have been immediately disqualified.
We went on to discuss the Nancy Pelosi v Leon Panetta prize fight. Dick believes a Pelosi explanation or apology will save the day. I mentioned that our intelligence agencies have a time proven way to win a fight (leaking) and the President and Speaker should be careful in this matter.
We talked briefly about the Cheney v Obama smackdown of last week. Dick did not see it, so my gloating went unanswered.
We also talked about the situation in N. Korea which has worsened overnight.

Before the show Dick handed me a recap on a Boston Globe report about Governor Deval Patrick’s failure to work very much. I actually think that is a good thing, given his record thus far.
We then traveled all over the place – from Nancy Pelosi’s ongoing attempts to somehow pretend she wasn’t onboard with waterboarding from the start, to Elizabeth Edwards’ very wrongheaded “condemn the husband” tour, to Norman Hsu, “Dijongate”, the CIA, the MA trolley accident that injured 40 because the driver was texting, to the ridiculous spending at both the state and federal level.
At this point Dick is as outraged as I about the spending. And that is pretty darned outraged.

May 7th
Today we started with MA politics. Dick railed against graft. He said the MA government has no choice but to end the graft. I so disagree, as I am quite sure that the overwhelming democrat MA legislature would much prefer to raise taxes than cut any graft at all.
Then we talked about a new party – a fiscally conservative and socially libertarian party. By the end of the hour I had settled on the name “National Tea Party” despite the fact that Dick is absolutely sure that the Tea Parties are over. Little does he know…
Then we talked about the shifting of values – the end of competition, the socialization of education and the benefit of failure.
We went on to a local man, the organizer of his local teaparty, who was denied the right to speak at a town meeting despite a written request to do so. This was the first time that anyone could remember anyone being denied the right to free speech in Quincy. He wanted to talk about the town raising taxes.
Next we went on to Chrysler, Steve Rattner and the strong-arming of the secured creditors and a potential 5th amendment violation.
Next we had a bit of a battle about Valerie Plame, Scooter Libby, Richard Armitage, Tim Russet and Eckenrode (who I called Eckhart). Dick vowed that Scooter Libby is currently serving time in prison for outing Valerie Plame. I disabused him of his notion. The lack of understanding of this case is breathtaking.
Then we talked President Obama’s stealth admission that the administration was reconsidering military tribunals, and the democrats refusal to fund the closing of Gitmo absent a plan.
Dick went on to quote previously never heard before words of George Bush on his last day in office. Since he was not a fan of the president, I’m at a loss to explain how he heard those words.
We talked about Mitt Romney. We talked about inflation creeping up and Tim Geithner and the President’s new propose crack down on American corporations doing business overseas. I voiced my concern that American businesses will permanently leave this country for a more tax friendly venue.
We talked some about the stress tests and the push back from the banks and how the lack of lending may be tied to the notion that the administration’s tampering with existing contracts has caused a lack of confidence in the lending markets.
We talked about John Edwards and lying.
Finally we talked about Andy McCarthy’s boycotting to Eric Holder’s roundtable.
