Operation Tree Party
It takes all kinds
Oct 18th
I heard a lot of tornado stories at Harvest Fest last weekend. 80% were stories of kindness, of people who came to help and worked endlessly, often for free; the volunteers who haven’t dropped the ball, no matter how many months go by; the people who suffered damage and went out to help people who suffered more damage. All of them would make your heart soar.
And then there was the 20%.
One person told me that after the tornado, local kids bragged that they knew where they could get “free stuff” despite the fact that they suffered no damage. They were proud and boisterous about how they gamed the system, and wanted everyone else to know how they could do it too. The person who recounted this story was pretty sure the parents were the ones passing out the information to their kids, and considered stealing from those who needed help, a badge of accomplishment. These were the same kids whose parents claimed, and got benefits from FEMA because FEMA didn’t bother to vet them.
Another person told me a story about working on hurricane relief in Munson, a town utterly decimated by the tornado. He worked at a large center than gave out needed goods including diapers, rubber gloves and other things donated to the victims. One Sunday a couple came in and filled bags to the brim with the free stuff, joyous in their accomplishment. The reporter decided to engage them in conversation and asked where they lived. They replied that they lived in a town not touched by the tornado. He calmly explained that these goods were for people who needed them because they had lost so much. As a result the man returned his goods, but the woman refused, saying that they were “free”. The reporter watched as they drove away in their brand new BMW.
As they say, it takes all kinds. Too bad, really.
Feast and Fire
Aug 19th
If you are in the area, and have tired of watching the endless reel of my TV show, stop by Feast and Fire on the Sturbridge Common, 1-9 PM tomorrow (Saturday). The Sturbridge Tea Party has a booth where we will have a raffle to benefit Operation Tree Party, and we will also be selling Sturbridge Tea Party tea shirts.
Be there or be square!
Pardon me while I sip my tea
Aug 4th
I walked into the radio station for my TV debut today and promptly poured coffee down my shirt. Vintage Jane. The camera was sort of behind me so I tried to forget it was there and just do my show. Dick was on fire for the first half hour launching a campaign to stop Congress from collecting salary and benefits. Welcome to my world Dick. Of course he blamed the tea party for not including his idea in the debt ceiling bill.
Has anyone else noticed that whenever democrats do something heinous – like call Tea Partier’s “terrorists” the response is: “they all do it.” When republicans do something, it’s just the republicans who are the bad guys. I brought up VP Biden’s remark about tea partiers being terrorists today, And Dick commented that it was his job to say stuff like that and Dick Cheney did the same thing. I asked for an example but his memory failed. Anyone remember Dick Cheney calling the progressives names?
Operation Tree Party is up and running and doing well. What a great team we have. WE are busy organizing, coming up with a business plan, and plotting for donations. The website is here: We are looking at “bare root trees” which are about 6 feet tall when planted and cost about $100.00 each. But first we hope to plant Liberty Trees in Southbridge and Sturbridge to kick off the project.
More later…
Operation Tree Party – Lift off
Jul 5th
Yesterday, we were invited to the Southbridge VFW to raise funds for Operation Tree Party. Each year, on July 4th, they hold a 5k race. This was the 35th year it has taken place. They do a great job. Despite the fact that most runners don’t come loaded with cash, people were very generous. Both State senator Steve Moore and State Rep Peter Durant were present. We had an opportunity to speak with both. The chair of the democrat party in Southbridge called and then showed up to object to “politics at the VFW”. Apparently, he was not happy that the Sturbridge Tea Party is sponsoring Operation Tree Party. I guess the democrats in Southbridge aren’t terribly green.
