Sturbridge Tornado – lots left to do
Jun 19th
Nearly 3 weeks after the tornado smashed into central Ma, there is still tons of work to do. Lots of organized efforts happen every day, which are, of course, very disorganized. Yesterday I delivered lunch to volunteers who were clearing trees in Southbridge. Tree removal is not covered by insurance, unless it lands on a structure. So most of the volunteering going on has to do with chainsaws, axes, chippers and lugging and hauling massive amounts of wood.
From what I’ve seen, the volunteers work all day long for free with a smile on their faces. I know I feel privileged to be part of the effort, and I think that feeling is universal. Volunteers just show up from all over the state. Many are high school kids, and many are not. It is very inspiring.
The food was donated by various vendors including Boston Market that hauled about 80 sandwiches and cornbread down from Worcester. People are simply incredible.
Last night was Tornado Relief Night at the Worcester Tornado’s our local minor league baseball team. It was also Sturbridge Softball Team Night at the ballpark. Amy’s kids, Megan and Hailey, were invited to throw out the first pitch. They did great! Later they stood on the field holding their hats during the singing of the national anthem. Finally, they were interviewed for a documentary being made about the tornado. My only issue with the event is they were introduced as “victims”. They are survivors.
